Planning a Handicapped Bathroom
When you need to set up a handicap friendly bathroom, you must first understand the regulations as set forth by the ADA or Americans with Disabilities Act. There are certain measurements especially when it comes to a handicap toilet and grab bars. Also it is crucial there is enough space in front of the toilet, the rule is at least 32 inches. In addition to a handicap toilet, a bathroom of this type may also require a shower, tub and sink to be completely functional.
Today there are many tools and fixtures available to help out with a handicap bathroom. For example, a handicapped bath may be equipped with a bath seat and tub door so the individual does not have to step over the tub rim to get out. Shower stalls usually have a chair or bench and safety bars as well. These innovations can help those with a disability take care of their own personal hygiene, or at least allow them to help their caregiver. You may want to equip motion sensor sinks that turn on and off automatically if grasping is difficult. There are also motion sensors for flushing toilets and drying hands.
Another thing to check is that all surfaces are non slip. This can be difficult in a bathroom, but for the disabled it is a must. Those with disabilities and also some elderly individuals are more susceptible to falls in the bathroom because it can get slippery. Choose a flooring material that is water resistant yet not slick, and always use a bathmat. There should be a towel or rug to stand on when exiting the shower or tub to avoid the risk of slipping on wet feet, which is a good idea for every bathroom.
Another option is to hire a contractor to set it up for you, but if you go this route make sure they have proper experience constructing bathrooms for the disabled. There are some companies that do only this, which are probably your best bet because of their vast experience. By using a company who specializes in building the handicapped bath, you are helping to make sure the bathroom is crafted to be safe and ADA compliant. If you want to learn more about what makes something ADA compliant there is a great deal of information on the Web.
