Choosing a Handicap Wheelchair

For those with limited mobility, a handicap wheelchair can be their most important possession. Wheelchairs give those who cannot walk the ability to get around. There are different types of wheelchairs at different price points. When shopping for a chair it is a good idea to first evaluate your needs. One thing that can make a difference is how long the wheelchair will be needed. For short term disabilities, a manual wheelchair is often an ideal choice.

Manual wheelchairs are powered by the person sitting in the chair or someone pushing it from behind. In order to move a wheelchair there must be upper body strength. For individuals who are not strong enough for a manual wheelchair and do not have someone to push them everywhere, an electric wheelchair is a more liberating choice. Electric wheelchairs are run on a motor and controlled much like any vehicle. Electric wheelchairs go faster than manual chairs and for many people are more easily controlled. There are even stand up electric chairs.

A wheelchair is a medical item that is often covered under a health insurance policy. If you do not qualify for coverage, you will have to take into account the cost of the chair. Even if you do have coverage, there may be limitations or rules regarding what kind of wheelchair you can get. Wheelchairs can be rented or purchased, often through a finance program. The first thing you should do is check your insurance policy if you have one to see if the expense of a chair is covered. If not, look into financing programs that fit your price range. There are some refurbished chairs that are cheaper than new chairs but work just as well.

If you are not used to using a handicap wheelchair it may be frustrating at first. This is especially the case for those who are suffering from short-term disability due to injury. These people are used to walking and find being bound to a wheelchair uncomfortable. Over time and with practice, they can learn to navigate effortlessly in the chair until they are able to walk again. This is often after a long transition period which includes physical therapy. It all depends on the type of disability. All in all, the wheelchair is an extremely useful piece of equipment for many disabled persons.
